Surveys
Surveys are sustained expository work: a treatment of one area built to teach it rather than to settle a single open question. Most are book-length and read front to back. Some are reference works, consulted an entry at a time rather than read through, and the UC Encyclopedia below is one of those; what puts them in the same section is the purpose, teaching a whole area rather than settling one question, not the shape. Where a paper states and argues one precise result, a survey lays out a whole framework or subfield chapter by chapter — definitions, running examples, and worked constructions building on one another — so a reader can come in without the background and leave able to use the material.
Like papers, surveys here are generated (co-authored) with the help of AI, and the same honesty about that applies: a survey is only as good as the definitions and proofs it contains, and every chapter is open to the same scrutiny a paper’s single result would get.
Where this is headed
A survey isn’t meant to stay static reading material forever. The plan is for interactive learning content — chapter-by-chapter slides, worked examples, tiered quizzes — to eventually be generated from a survey’s own text, not authored separately alongside it. UC for Gamers below is the first candidate for this, but the intent is general: every survey added here is a future source for its own interactive tutorial, kept in sync with the book it’s drawn from rather than drifting into a second, hand-maintained artifact.
